2022 Plaque Recipients
The Anchor Ranch
The Anchor Ranch is a 2022 Plaque recipient, nominated for its multi-faceted historic significance, the Anchor ranch has a storied past.
In the thirties, tuberculosis forced Naval Captain George Nicklett to search for a home in a dry climate. He found and purchased this land and a “homestead” cabin from James Budge. Later, he built additional structures, including the main house. He named the property Anchor Ranch.
In the fifties, Dr. Frederick and Jackie Hiller acquired the property. The Hillers operated Anchor Ranch as a dude ranch for a limited clientele into the seventies.
In 2021 the owners of the Anchor Ranch began a challenging preservation project, replacing the foundations of several of the ranch structures. The 2022 Award nomination includes the exceptional nature of this preservation project.
